According to ISO/TC 228, the international standard proposal “Sustainable Tourism - Good Practices for Implementing Fundamental Principles of Sustainable Tourism in Tourism Destinations” submitted by Sichuan Tourism University has officially passed the pre-working project registration after 64 member states vote, which will be a major contribution to the world tourism industry from our university.

“Sustainable Tourism - Good Practices for Implementing Fundamental Principles of Sustainable Tourism in Tourism Destinations” is the first international standard proposal for sustainable tourism independently led by China. It achieves a breakthrough that the drafting of tourism international standards is no longer led by foreign countries, makes up for the lack of China's tourism international standardization construction and injects “Chinese elements” into international standardization of tourism. The standard is an important way to promote global harmony between people and nature, deepen the effective protection of tourism resources, improve the living environment and boost a healthier development of tourism ecology, which will play an important role in the development of tourism in China and the world.

Professor Liu Yong from the School of Sports and Leisure and Deputy Dean Zhang Yuan from the School of Foreign Languages applied for registration of WG 13 Sustainable Tourism Working Group in accordance with the requirements of the National Tourism Standards Committee and China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. It will take about 3 to 4 years to compile the standard, and a lot of technical work and data will be collected from many countries. China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, together with the technical working group of our university, will attend several ISO international meetings and communicate with the member countries to complete the development of this international standard together.

At the international standards working meeting of the university on October 12, 2022, President Lu Yi informed the relevant progress and highly valued the formulation work. He pointed out that the international tourism standards are equivalent to the second law, which plays a huge part in regulating the order of tourism market in the world. Participation in the development of international standards is conducive to strengthening China’s voice as well as national cultural soft power. Our university, as the first leading unit, shoulders a great responsibility and honorable mission, and will play a positive role in promoting the world tourism industry and the training of international standardized talents in tourism.
